Περίληψη

Transport is a cornerstone of the European integration process, promoting jobs and economic growth, with the transportation sector employing ∼10 M people and generating ∼4.5% of the EU’s GDP. Nonetheless, transport in the EU grossly depends on oil (∼93%) and therefore is responsible for almost a quarter of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions, with road transport being by far the biggest emitter. Thus, there is a need to decrease petroleum fuel dependence and move towards low-emission mobility. To this end, the introduction of biofuels could play a massive role in decarbonizing the transport sector.

The recent findings and activities of the Renewable & Sustainable Energy Laboratory making synthesis and assessment of 2nd and 3rd generation biofuels are presented and connected with its significant environmental benefits and circular economy aspects.
