Basic principles of kinematics and dynamics of a point and a solid body. Introductory elements of continuum mechanics for solids (stresses and strains) and fluids (stresses and rates of strain). The course is based on the knowledge that the new students have acquired at high school, while emphasis is set upon the application of the physical laws in 3D, vector presentation and using elements of differential and integral calculus to solve engineering problems. A main goal of the course is to introduce the former pupil to the engineering/scientific way of approaching problems.
Based on classical physics exercises, the laboratory work aims to introduce the new students to the concepts of “experimental investigation” and data analysis: experimental design, experimental error, methods of data presentation, modelling the data with appropriate equations and parameter evaluation, making diagrams, using correct units and appropriate data analysis.
